Field Trips

Three pre-meeting field trips and one post-meeting trip are planned.

Thursday May 21 - Saturday May 23:

Rocks, structures and tectonic scenarios: introduction to the Grenville Province of Ontario
with Fried Schwerdtner, Alan Dickin and Pierre-Yves Robin

  • The trip will provide an overview of the geology of the two main divisions of the Grenville Orogen in central and southeastern Ontario: (i) the Central Metasedimentary Belt, and (ii) the Central Gneiss Belt.
  • Cost of trip is $400(CAN) and includes transportation, double-occupancy accommodation for two nights in Bancroft and Bracebridge, lunches and field trip guide. 

Saturday May 23rd:  

Niagara rocks, building stones, war and wine
with Gerry Middleton, Nick Eyles, Nina Chapple and Bob Watson.

  • Come and explore the geology and history of the Niagara Peninsula as seen through spectacular views of Niagara Falls and Gorge.
  • Trace the use of rocks as building stones and see the famous battlefield of Queenston Heights (October 1812) when the US invaded Canada (unsuccessfully).
  • Enjoy lunch and dinner in the convivial atmosphere of local wineries.
  • Cost of trip is $200 (CAN) and includes transportation, winery lunch and dinner with wines, guide book.

Wednesday May 20- Friday May 22nd:

Sudbury, Ontario: meteorite impact, ore deposits and regional geology

with Ulrich Riller.

  • Delegates will be acquainted with structures, rock types and ore deposits (Cu-Ni and PGE) generated by the large meteorite impact at Sudbury.
  • The trip will also address structural and sedimentological highlights of the Paleoproterozoic Eastern Penokean Orogen.
  • Cost of trip is $400(CAN) - Student cost is $200 (CAN) thanks to the generous support of the Mineral Deposits Division of the Geological Association of Canada. Trip will start and finish in Sudbury; participants are responsible for their own transport to and from Sudbury. Includes double-occupancy accommodation, local transportation, all lunches and guide book.

Thursday May 28th:

Sedimentology of the Paris and Galt moraines and hydrogeological implications
with Hazen Russell, Don Cummings and David Sharpe.

This trip investigates the origin and structure of the Paris and Galt moraines focusing on implications for Laurentide Ice sheet paleohydrology, the deglaciation of Southern Ontario and improved groundwater and aggregate management.

Cost of trip is $100(CAN): includes transportation, packed lunch and guide book.
